Outdoor Countertop

"I used the Concrete Countertop Solutions approach to make a countertop for an outdoor BBQ. I am a reasonably capable DIY person. I found the edge forms easy to use. You do have to be careful so it all fits together tightly. The Z Clips and Fiber Mesh were easy to install. For the concrete I used a sand mix with a Charcoal dye and Z Liqui-Crete. I mixed it per instructions putting the dye in the water first then adding the Z Liqui-Crete followed by the Sand Mix. In hindsight I likely mixed it a bit drier than it should have been. Pouring the mixed concrete into the forms seemed to work well, but because the mix was a bit dry, I should have spent a bit more time making sure the mix filled all the form, especially in the areas around the cutouts for the BBQ and side burner. I ended up with a few voids in those areas. I made a form vibrating tool using an oscillating multi-tool. That worked very well and I ended up with a very few small voids on the visible edges. Leveling and troweling the surface was standard concrete finishing. You do have to be patient as it takes a while for the concrete to set up enough to properly trowel. The form edges snaped off as advertised the next day. I let it set for a week before sanding the surface and applying the Z Aqua-Thane M35. I rolled on three light coats with a day between coats and sanding each coat before applying the next one. The result is a very satisfying surface on the countertop. It was worth the effort!"

Q&A

What’s the difference between your Liqui-Crete and CounterPack mixtures?
The difference between the two is the consistency of the mix. The Liqui-Crete is designed to use slightly more water, giving you a more flowable mix that will flow throughout the small 1" grid of the fiberglass mesh reinforcement. If you are using the fiberglass mesh and clips, you will want to go with the Liqui-Crete. If you are using a more traditional reinforcement such as welded wire mesh, you will be better off with Counter-Pack.
Will z clips also support 10 gauge wire mesh?
Yes, they should hold 10 and 8 gauge.
Small project can I just buy 2 z channels , if so how much?
Are you referring to the countertop forms? Please email or call us and we can help you with this request.
The z clips I ordered seem to be too high to use with the Euroform edge product. Is the mesh necessary for that profile?
With the EuroForm you do need to make sure you buy the Euro Z Clips. We can exchange them for you but I would definitely still use the mesh.
I ordered Z Clips for concrete counter tops. I'm wondering if they come in different sizes?
The clips come in 2 sizes, standard and euro. The Euro Clips are smaller and meant to be used with out Euro Form Edge Profile.
'm building an island for a BBQ grill. I don't need the wall form as all of the counter is the same (open to the environment. Can I buy the form package without the wall pieces.I
All of our form packages are assembled in the manufacturing line and the back wall pieces act as spacers to help prevent damage in shipping. For this reason, we do not pull packages apart. The back wall pieces are considered included for free.
